thecorbomitemaneuverhd311Joseph Sargent, the Emmy award winning director who helmed one of the most important Star Trek episodes, has died aged 89.

Sargent initially began studying as an actor after service in World War II, before turning his hand to directing. His credits include Star Trek’s The Corbomite Maneuver, for which he is credited with giving Leonard Nimoy the direction upon which he based his portrayal of Spock, suggesting that he show curiosity about the object the Enterprise crew was facing, rather than fear. That single word “Fascinating” helped to define Spock.

His other genre credits include 11 episodes of The Man From UNCLE (four of which were combined to form the feature films One Spy Too Many and The Spy in the Green Hat), as well as The Invaders, Colossus: The Forbin Project, The Night That Panicked America (about the Orson Welles version of The War of the Worlds), and four of the five episodes of the James Michener adaptation Space.

Away from the genre he won an Emmy for the TV movie which spun off the cop series Kojak, and helmed various movies including the original (and far superior) version of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, and the less well-received Jaws: The Revenge.

  1. I stumbled on this and am very saddened to get this as I knew and liked Joe. Thru a very long and rambled history my fondest memories of Trances Beach before the over wealthy destroyed the Coastline and reserved it for there exclusivity Joe and his wonderful wife Caroline, brought a cousin and his friend to spend weeks at the beach. Living in Woodland Hills then meant being at the outskirts of Los Angles City development. With the summers so hot the asphalt would burn a unseasoned foot, trips to the beach were a short jaunt over the hills, down trough the canyon then North on Hwy 1 to the Beach House. one market supplied all the goods needed for a summer od deviled eggs tomato sandwiches Tuna salad and stolen cold beers. He and his wife were always generous giving us neighbor kids rides in there Topless Jag E-type or Merc.. I’ve lost touch with those people and those days are a blurry memory. His work will remain age as good as it gets, we simply will fade away. To the living and remaining people of old times, I had a Great Time.
