According to reports in today’s British newspapers, Ron Grainer’s Doctor Who theme will be one of four television themes played as part of the Olympic opening ceremony.

Although The Mail on Sunday unsurprisingly leads the story focusing ire on the choice of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Relax and the Sex Pistols’ God Save the Queen, it includes the full list. The BBC News theme from 1954, the Coronation Street theme, Sousa’s Liberty Bell march, specifically included for its Monty Python usage, and the Doctor Who theme will all feature.

It’s not known which of the many official variants of the theme will be played, or whether there will be a new version prepared.

The London Olympics open on July 27th.

Update: Although the theme was heard during the technical rehearsal on July 26, it did not feature on the night after other acts overran. The TARDIS sound effect was heard earlier, during the performance of Bohemian Rhapsody.
