Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz have admitted that they have been pleasantly surprised by the assistance they have received from Disney for their new fairytale-based show, Once Upon A Time.

“The studio has been quite supportive in letting us do our interpretation of the characters,” Kitsis told the Television Critics Association on August 7. “This is the first time we’ve shown Snow White with a sword and pregnant.”

Once Upon A Time is set both in our world and the fairytale world of Storybrooke. Snow White and Prince Charming’s daughter Emma is brought across into Storybrooke to save the fairytale characters from the Evil Queen. Each character has a counterpart in our world, so the Queen is Regina; Snow White is Sister Mary Margaret and Prince Charming is simply known as John Doe. “For us, the show isn’t about breaking the curse,” Horowitz noted. “That’s part of it; the show is about these characters and what they’re going through.

“We’re more interested in why the Evil Queen hates Snow White; why Grumpy is Grumpy,” Kitsis added. “We love the idea of going back and forth and informing what the character wants in life.”

Once Upon A Time, starring Jennifer Morrison as Emma, begins on October 23 on ABC.
