Actor James Arness, who played the eponymous Thing from Another World in Howard Hawks’ seminal movie, has died aged 88.
Although best known for his role as Marshal Dillon in the long running TV Western Gunsmoke, Arness shot to fame as the giant walking “intellectual carrot” in the 1951 film, directed by Christian Nyby, which spawned the phrase “Keep watching the skies!” Arness also appeared in the 1954 creature feature Them! about a nest of gigantic irradiated ants.
