Nandor’s old familiar from the 1970s returns to Staten Island, Guillermo leaves to serve a new master and Nadja and Lazslo revive their musical act.
There’s a lot going on this week, any one of the multiple threads being strong enough to support its own episode. The A-plot revolves around the return of Benjy, Nandor’s familiar from the 1970s, who he tired of and dumped off in Delaware with a memory wipe. Unfortunately (for Nandor) Benjy wants his master to finally make good with his promise to turn him into a vampire. Guillermo is understandably feeling more pushed out than normal and directs his services to a recently turned vampire, Celeste, but all is not what it seems.
Even more fun is Laszlo and Nadja’s performance of their back catalogue at an open mic event. Yes, they are awful performers, but many of their vintage compositions have since been used by other artistes, though subtly changed. Back in the 1850s, the inept duo were singing ‘Chum on Irene,’ a song written by Laszlo to honour a local fishmonger’s wife long before Dexys Midnight Runners made it an 80s smash as ‘Come on Irene’! They also wrote the basis for ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat’, though with the filthiest of lyrics.
Verdict: Everyone gets the chance to shine this week, and the positive fallout might be Guillermo being treated with the respect he’s due. It’ll never last! 8/10
