I can’t believe we’ve reached the end of this series – and what a joy it has been. While not being a big season finale, there’s a lovely thread set up for Season 2 (which has already been commissioned) and Nandor might regret not treating Guillermo as well as she should.
The main thread follows Nandor’s discovering that he has a living relative, 94-year-old Madeline, but tapping at her window leads to a heart attack and the vampires having to attend her funeral. Of course, church and the undead don’t mix and they start catching fire. But don’t worry, some (holy) water will surely put out the flames – oops!
Thread two follows Nadja’s former lover Jeff/Gregor, who is constantly reincarnated and seeking her. Unfortunately for him he is always fated to be decapitated through the hand of Laszlo, and this time is no exception! Oh, and that moment where Guillermo disguises his true heritage and admits that his parents were piñata farmers. ‘Someone has to breed those colourful donkeys.’ Hilarious
Verdict: creators Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement back as director and writer, the quality of this finale was never in doubt. Probably the funniest thing on TV at the moment and the rarest of beasts that not only survives the transfer from film to TV, but is its equal. 9/10
