Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, out now on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD

The hosts are on a mission…

There are far too many twists and turns in the second season of Westworld to want to spoil them in a review – if you want an episode by episode discussion, check out Nick Joy’s reviews here on the site, starting with episode 1. Suffice it to say that the multiple timelines and existential shocks that characterised the first season remain here, with an expansion of the world both inside and outside Westworld.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment haven’t stinted on the extras (contained on the third disc of the Blu-ray set), and there’s no question that they make the set worth buying, even if you’ve already seen the episodes. Executive producers Jonathan and Lisa Nolan give insights into the filming process (Lisa Nolan clearly enjoying having had the chance to direct the episode that delves beneath the surface of Peter Mullan’s James Delos, for instance), while all areas of production get the spotlight at some point. Commentaries would have been the icing on the cake, but I suspect that it would be very easy for something to be inadvertently given away!

It was clear from the very first episode that Westworld wasn’t going to be the easiest of watches – it’s not a show that you can just keep half an eye on, or you’ll find yourself missing key points. That remains the case in this second season – so if you want a show to dive into fully, pick this up.

Verdict: An excellent package of extras marred only by a lack of commentaries. 9/10
