Minogue and O’Leary go back in time to the 90s to discover they’ve created an apocalyptic new timeline where Sarge was never a cop.
The spoof fly-on-the-wall cop documentary concludes its fourth season with its take on a popular fantasy trope – the time paradox – with predictable results. Minogue and O’Leary chase a creature through a time portal and find themselves in 1994.
However, because they are so unobservant, it takes a while for the officers to realise this, and it’s only when they run into Sarge as a child that the penny drops. They’re in the middle of a zombie apocalypse and need to change the past to alter the future. The joy is of course in acknowledging that we’ve been here multiple times before and discovering how our Kiwi cops manage such a challenge.
Verdict: A time-twisting conclusion to a season that hasn’t showcased the series’ best work, but proved that there’s still plenty of imagination to fire new episodes. 7/10
