While out on patrol, Minogue and O’Leary encounter a series of people who’ve been attacked by their worst nightmares, and all the victims had visited Wellington’s Fear Factory.
As Roosevelt famously said: ‘The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.’ But then he hadn’t been to Wellington or faced a rat the size of a man, a shark on dry land, or a person with a completely smooth face – ‘…like a bum cheek’. This consistently funny half hour was directed by series co-creator Jemaine Clement and it really shows in both the confidence of the direction and the number of gags that land.
We all have our own fears – and some are understandable. Sargent Maaka is terrified by giant spiders, Officer Roy is terrified of heights (and finds the toilet floor has dropped away), while other officers are scared of Darth Vader and tiger bats! Officer Minogue is terrified of public speaking, sock puppets and popping balloons, while O’Leary has a fear of her domineering mother. The shapeshifter would appear to be unstoppable, but until now it hasn’t met the most neurotic and high maintenance member of the team.
Verdict: Another belter, adding an interesting new monster to the Wellington Paranormal universe. 8/10
