Minogue and O’Leary’s nemeses, Officers Donovan and Laupepe, interrogate a zombie, who then infects them. It’s up to our hapless duo of crime fighters to stop them before a zombie apocalypse erupts in New Zealand’s capital.
Directed and co-written by series co-creator Jemaine Clement, the first season of this What we do in the Shadows ends on a high, with some great sight gags, throwaways lines and a general sense of the absurd. It’s the subversion of the mundane that makes for the biggest laughs, and there’s plenty here this week.
The infected cops are driving around Wellington, looking to pull people over so that they can eat their brains. Minogue and O’Leary respond to an attack on a fast food worker who has just had her arm bitten: ‘Which way did they go, love?’ ‘That way. It’s a drive-through.’ Or the moment when the zombies in custody demand brains and the prison guard suggests he has a couple of muesli bars if they’re interested.
The murderous duo are eventually captured and then subjected to tasks like re-enacting a scene from Titanic and performing the zombie dance from Thriller. Totally bonkers, but it’s played dead straight, which makes it even funnier.
Verdict: With more monsters on its streets than Sunnydale, Wellington is a magnet to classic monsters and by-the-books cops. It’s a lethal combination, and you can’t help getting dragged into the mirth and mayhem. 8/10
