A trillionaire makes an offer that can’t be refused, Angela investigates her past and Adrian Veidt grows some more clones.
If Angela took something of a backseat last week to allow Laurie Grant’s character to establish itself, she’s back with a vengeance this week, checking her family tree. It would indeed appear that she is related to the mysterious Will Reeve (a nice turn by Louis Gossett Jr), who we last saw being sucked up into the sky. But what’s with his pills?
As a whole, the episode is primarily using the time to introduce new characters and do a bit of world building. Trillionaire Lady Trieu (Hong Chau) is building a Doomsday Clock in Tulsa, having bribed a family to relinquish their home by offering a baby and $5m. Her wider intentions are still unclear, though she is colluding with Will, who is back on terra firma and doesn’t actually need his wheelchair.
As has been established in the previous instalment, the most fascinating segments of the show are those with Adrian Veidt (Jeremy Irons). We watch him fish for foetuses before placing them in an accelerator machine that grows them into full-sized humans – more clones of Phillips (Tom Mison) and Crookshanks (Sara Vickers). He had a particular wild time last night judging by the corpses in his mansion, but then that’s plenty of cannon fodder for his trebuchet, as he catapults their bodies into the atmosphere. We also learn that he’s been here for four years. Quite bizarre.
Verdict: Angela and Laurie dig deeper into the murder investigation, discovering that greater forces are at work then initially believed. Something of a slow-burn after last week’s firecracker, you get the impression that we’re being fed very relevant background info that will fuel the remainder of the season. Still unique, and definitely an acquired taste. 7/10
