The ghost of an abusive husband continues to torment his family even after his death.

Directed by series creator Vera Miao, this twenty-minute excursion into Asian horror reminds us of both the restrictions of the show’s premise and the freedom that comes with it. Each episode is based on a two-sentence horror story – the first is shown on screen at the beginning, the second (the punch line) joins it at the end. This means that the story can only go as deep as that limited narrative will allow, for fear of breaching the spirit of the device.

What we get here is a relentless sequence that might form the closing act of a feature horror movie. Angela and mother-in-law Ma have lost their respective husband and son, but he just won’t stay down. There’s no set up – he’s dead but he’s terrifying them. As the story progresses we find out how he has abused both of them in different ways, and there’s plenty of time to reflect on what went wrong and how they are where are. It’s also really tightly directed by Miao (she knows her own show very well) and by the end you’ll be musing over an ending that’s a little different to what was telegraphed.

Verdict: In the style of a two sentence horror story – ‘This relentless sojourn into Asian horror is packed with invention and thrills. None of us were born victims and neither are we passengers on our journeys.’ 8/10
