A mother goes to extreme lengths to keep her daughter at home, a Good Samaritan regrets her altruistic actions and a hacker finds out that they’ve gone deeper than intended.

The CW’s first season of horror tales based on two-sentence horror stories concludes with a double-length episode that features three unrelated stories, each serving a short sharp sting, never outstaying it’s welcome.

Ma (directed by series creator Vera Miao) is a supernatural horror about a young Chinese woman’s romance with a new neighbour and how her mother intervenes. Guilt Trip (directed by JD Dillard) follows a girl who picks up a hitchhiker after she sees him being beaten by the police, and then immediately regrets the decision. Finally, Singularity (directed by Miao again) is a technology, body-horror story about a biohacker who discovers powers within the internet for both good and evil.

Each of the stories is well produced, and the only real downside to the first two is that our familiarity with the show’s format means that the inevitable twists are fairly obvious. Singularity feels like something out of Black Mirror, its future tech being a cautionary tale for those considering dabbling in ‘wetware’.

Verdict: Two Sentence Horror Stories has proven to be an entertaining mix of popular horror memes with modern twists. It’s one of the most diverse shows on TV, in both gender and race, proving (as if it was needed) that horror is no longer the sole domain of white males. 7/10
