If Twin Peaks has always been about the extremes – Bob’s evil versus Laura’s innocence – then there are two moments in this episode that illustrate utter joy and complete sadness. I shed some tears for the first time this season, both of sadness and joy, which is no mean feat.
As this hour ended we are left with the prospect of one final regular episode and then the two-part finale. And then that’s it. Is three hours long enough to tie-up the loose ends, or would it be foolish to think that’s even possible? Again, the characters start converging on the town as the key players prepare their endgame.
Dougie is blankly eating his favourite chocolate cake and switches on the TV to find Bill Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard is showing. And there’s a character called Gordon Cole? Is this the moment of reawakening we’ve been waiting for all these weeks, and will a jolt of 120 volts AC kill or cure?
Verdict: The Charlie/Audrey arguments continue to mystify, and we now have to ask just who on Earth Judy is? Too many questions, not enough time – this is a show that is clawing towards its finale, whatever form that takes. 8/10
