Gar is activated, Donna and Kory step up the rescue effort and Dick does a little shopping…
It seems weirdly appropriate, given what a hot mess Hank is, that this episode feels so unfocused. The plot that gives it its title is maybe ten minutes long, played for (dark but successful) laughs and sees Hawk hit rock bottom. It’s good, but I can’t help but wonder how good it would have been with the rest of the episode to play with too.
Elsewhere there’s lots to enjoy, especially Jericho sparring with his dad inside their shared head and a truly horrific origin for Rose. She’s rapidly become one of the best characters here and the shot of her coughing up blood and walking down stairs to where father is waiting to kill her again is as powerful as it is horrifying.
Elsewhere Rose comes clean and Dick absolutely loses it in the most impressive work we’ve seen from Curran Walters so far. The plan is in free fall and so are the Titans but this is just the beginning. The Titans are battered, bloodied and damaged. But they’re still better than the other option Even with the occasional calls for stabbings.
But it’s poor, beleaguered, idiot Hank who stays with you. The bleak humor of groupie sex interrupted by the injuries he’s too stupid to dodge, selling his uniform for drugs, forgetting he’s done it. Hank isn’t at rock bottom – he’s punched through and is in freefall. Hopefully he’ll be able to get his act together for next episode because the Titans really do have their work cut out for them and right now, so does the show. 7/10
