Maggie and Negan having to put their bitter enmity aside as they perilously venture into a walker-infested Manhattan in search of her kidnapped son Hershel.

Talk about an odd couple! While in later seasons Maggie just about grew to tolerate being in the same room as Negan, she understandably still hates the killer of her husband. Now they have to work together to save son Hershel, and the sparks inevitably fly.

Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan clearly are relishing the extra time spent with their characters across this six-episode spinoff, ably supported by a cast including Zeljko Ivanek and Gaius Charles.

Maggie and Negan must break into Manhattan, which was cut off from the world in the early stages out the outbreak. Before you can shout ‘Escape from New York, anyone?’ the duo have encountered leather-clad gangs to the accompaniment of a Carpenter-lite synth score. And it’s all OK in a Walking Dead way, but it just all feels so tired now, and stumbling walkers just have nothing new to shock us with.

Verdict: Perfectly serviceable, with two strong lead roles, but this could easily have been a sub-plot strung across a number of regular Walking Dead main-show episodes. 6/10
