A lonely bachelor makes a telepathic connection to a stranger, but the path of true love is never a straight route in the Twilight Zone.
CBS All Access’ Jordan Peele-hosted revival of Rod Serling’s classic anthology returns for a second season with a strong drama which is essentially a one-hander starring Jimmi Simpson (Westworld) as Phil Hayes, a lonely man desperate to meet the right person. During a blind date that isn’t going anywhere he hears a voice in his head, that of Annie, who lives hundreds of miles away in Diamond Falls. Once he’s gotten over this phenomena, he realises that he’s in love with her and they develop a platonic relationship.
Asked to not look her up, Phil can’t resist a Facebook search and discovers that she’s married. She implies that she’s in an abusive relationship and finally agrees to meet up with Phil, but will she be the person he expects? I’ll say no more about the resolution, as it’s one of those wonderful Twilight Zone endings that packs a punch. Is he dreaming or is the voice real? Is it his conscience or is it madness? Simpson does a wonderful job of keeping us guessing, in a script by Sarah Amini and Emily Chang (they both appear in this episode), directed by Mathias Herndl.
Verdict: An excellent return to the fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. Let’s hope the quality can be maintained across the run. 9/10
