Rose is danger on all fronts as multiple parties descend on the cereal convention.
Here we are at the end of The Sandman’s first season – and just take a look back at the adventures we’ve experienced in these 10 episodes. Neil Gaiman’s genre-shifting fantasy series was always going to be tricky to recreate visually on screen, and yet it has been achieved, and with an essential through-line that a series needs if it’s to bring viewers back.
The Corinthian explains to Rose why she’s a threat to Dream, and there’s an inevitability to what’s going to happen to her once matters are resolved at the convention. As anticipated, Dream arrives and confronts the Corinthian, resolving the grim events at the hotel in Georgia, but it’s a bittersweet moment, with Rose preparing for her final battle.
Fans of the comics know what happens next, and matters play out very much as you’d hope, but with enough seeds sown to set up further seasons. We are, after all, only 16 issues in to the 75+ of the comic book main series run. The casting has without exception been perfect, from the series leads to the one-shots, and the visual effects take us away to places we’ve only seen in comic book panels. A triumph on every level – having binged the series in one go I’m now going back to savour every moment at my leisure.
Verdict: The Sandman series that we deserved, and then some. Watch it now so that the series renewal news comes sooner rather than later. 10/10
