Swamp Thing Alec Holland has been captured and is in the hands of scientist Dr Woodrue, who is preparing to undertake experiments on him. But is this to save his wife’s life or feed his own mania?
Here we are at the penultimate episode of this ‘one season and out’ show and yet it doesn’t feel like we’re so close to the end. Right from the outset we’re reminded of Woodrue’s wife’s deteriorating condition, but he gaslights what she thinks she saw, which is Swamp Thing being transported to the lab.
Woodrue can’t wait to slice into his victim, chopping out organs that he determines serve no discernible purpose. Alec is no longer a man but a plant who thinks he’s a man, as evidenced by his heartbreaking discovery of the body at the end of the hour. More significantly, Daniel completes his transition to Blue Devil, taking out members of the Conclave with apparent ease, though the showmakers are still a little coy in what they show us – maybe the reveal will be in the finale ?
Elsewhere, there’s trouble for Matt who has a car crash, and Virginia Madsen’s Maria Sunderland discovers that trying to wipe out her nefarious husband has consequences, and she’s sectioned to take her out of the picture.
Verdict: As we approach the final instalment it’s pretty clear that one of two things will happen – a) lot of storylines will get wrapped up very quickly, or b) we won’t get the resolution we need and too much will be left hanging. Catch-22 really, and a crying shame, because this show had all the ingredients and the potential to be special. 8/10
