Dan Cassidy is in a coma, having been set upon by Avery’s thugs, but an experimental plant-based drug might help him recover… with unexpected side effects.

There’s a great moment at the start of this episode when Swamp Thing (an impressive Derek Mears) is under attack by hunters and he finally retaliates by smacking giant wooden splinters out of trees into the faces of his assailants. As the title suggests, this is the price you pay for crossing our hero. A lot of this week’s episode focuses on the consequences of poor decisions – we flashback to when Dan Cassidy made an unfortunate pact with a mystery stranger, and we also find out who was sent out to kill Alec.

Mad scientist Jason Woodrue (The Strain’s Kevin Durand) is having the time of his life chewing up the scenery and injecting the catatonic Cassidy with his new serum, and wouldn’t you guess that it causes no end of problems for his patient, who is now smoking… literally. Luckily Madame X is around to help out, but surely it’s just a matter of time now before the Blue Devil wades out into the swamp.

There’s no sign of Maria, Shawna or Susie this week, giving the remaining cast members the chance to flesh out their own characters. Abby and Alec/Swamp Thing in particular are getting time to talk about the latter’s situation, and the moment when he grows a white flower in his palm is beautiful.

Verdict: See this episode as the final phase of transformation – the baddies have revealed themselves and the creatures have evolved – battle lines are now being drawn up to prepare for a confrontation that will hopefully wreak some well-deserved vengeance. 7/10
