What would you tell your 16-year old self?
I’d tell myself not to worry about the boy in my Geography class that I fancied as he’d turn out to be horrible anyway and he wasn’t worth my tears. For the ‘younger’ Luke that we meet in this week’s supernaturally-charged residence, it’s a little more complicated.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the set-up of the episode, once most of the team find themselves trapped, is that they must confront something from their past. That expectation is subverted though as a much simpler way out is found. Too simple? I’d thought so but we do get an explanation, which makes sense, so it’s ultimately fairly satisfying. What doesn’t make sense is why Zooey is only Roman’s ‘Office Manager’, she should probably be a commander of a small army somewhere.
Elsewhere, we do get the answer to the cliff-hanger from last week as we find out that the McGuffin that August used on the sinister entities that caused the team to have to quarantine didn’t quite do a thorough enough job. How convenient, then, that August left his bag of tricks in Susan’s car, seeing as she was the one at Megan’s house ready to save the day with her own set of unique skills. Skills which are being drip-fed to us rather than fully explored, and I hope they are in a future episode because Susan has some interesting hidden depths.
Small narrative hiccoughs don’t diminish the warmth that SurrealEstate has managed to weave into its characters and the fact is, you’ll probably find yourself rooting for them – they’re the underdog after all and they’re clearly on the side of the angels. That’s just as well, as it looks like they have their work cut out… the little snippets they keep feeding us at the end of episodes are certainly creepy but any more on that and this review won’t be spoiler free. Hold on to your popcorn.
Verdict: The women in our favourite supernatural estate agent team kick all the ass this week. 8/10
