It’s earth, Jim, but not as we know it.
It’s important to keep your mind open when embarking on a new adventure in the adult animation space, especially in the sci-fi genre, but it won’t take you long to find your feet on this very familiar and strange planet.
It’s almost as if the story has been translated – or, more accurately, transliterated – for an alien species who is learning English but doesn’t understand any nouns yet, so they need everything described in a very precise, descriptive way. It immediately expresses the silliness of some of the things we might take for granted on this bonkers rock spinning round and round our tiny corner of the galaxy.
This opener sets up the Strange Planet exposition on an airline and we follow the story of an ‘Air Comfort Supervisor’ as she suffers the slings and arrows of being promoted to manage the team she used to be a part of.
I found myself giggling through most of it and heartily laughing at times. The stroppy customer whose ‘comfort’ needs she expertly anticipates is gently lambasted in such a relatable way (we’ve all been near someone like that on a flight) I found it such a witty scene. It’s such a simple device, to alter the names of familiar things slightly, in such a way as they’re still easily recognisable but it makes you view them in a new way. It’s heartwarming, too.
If this is in your Apple TV watchlist and you’ve been wondering whether to dive in, do it.
Verdict: Nothing short of delightful. 9/10
