Boba Fett must deal with two very different threats.
The third chapter in Disney’s Mandalorian spinoff is the weakest instalment so far, despite addressing a concern that I previously raised about too much focus on the past. Again written by show creator Jon Favreau and directed by executive producer Robert Rodriguez, there’s plenty going on, and yet none of it is that satisfying.
Everything is happening as a set-up for something yet to come, with little happening in the here and now. The flashbacks are limited to just one short sequence, giving Fett good reason to get revenge on some marauders, which does at least afford time on the street crime in Mos Espa. Fett takes pity on a gang of young, petty thieves, enlisting them in his ‘family’, and they come to his aid both during an attack in the palace and in a fun street chase (with occasionally sub-par fx).
Rodriquez finds a way to introduce one of his movie regulars into this world, and there’s plenty of Easter Eggs for the fans. But is it just me, or is it becoming a little tiring that legacy characters are being used so frequently? In the chase, every pedestrian appears to be a bit part player from one of the movies. It’s fun initially, but becomes a little too on the nose. Fett is at last starting to get the bigger picture about who’s running which game in town, but at times he’s incredibly naive.
Verdict: A Wookiee attack and moped speeders define this lesser instalment that hopefully is a prelude to something special. 7/10
