We’re on the final instalment of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and how those weeks have flown by. In the final analysis, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag, veering between huge, fan-pleasing moments with legacy characters to so-so VFX and unbelievable plot developments. But the biggest plus is Ewan McGregor’s Kenobi, the actor having fully grown into the role that he never quite fulfilled in the prequel trilogy.
Much of Kenobi’s journey has centred around his guilt for letting Anakin fall to the Dark Side. And he’s been aided immeasurably by having Hayden Christensen in the Anakin/Darth role. Inevitably, their confrontation here cannot be a final one, this duel to the death happening in A New Hope. Thus the writers are somewhat hamstrung with what they can do with characters that we know will still be alive in ten years time. Jeopardy can only go so far if you know that both parties are going to walk away, albeit a little roughed up.
As a mini-series, the show has fulfilled its potential to plug one of the gaps in the Star Wars story. It’s been fun to see Obi-Wan and Vader back in the limelight, as well as live action versions of the Inquisitors. But is it essential? Not really. Fan service alone doesn’t make a great show, and stripped of its Easter Eggs, this is basic run/catch/escape/repeat show. I’ll happily watch another season, but the approach to clunky plot resolutions needs fixing.
Verdict: Legacy Star Wars fun that does what it promises, but with plenty of room for improvement. 7/10
