Hera must answer to the New Republic while a reunion takes place far, far away.
In a thrilling episode we see everyone come together. Ahsoka arrives, Sabine and Ezra finally talk even if Sabine continues to evade the disaster she’s created in her drive to be with Ezra.
Ezra, for his part, treats her gently. It’s easy to see that he knows she’s paid a price to find him and he’s not rushing to force her to confess her culpability. I think this is really nicely handled – the temptation here would be to force the issue, to create pressure on Sabine and see her repent. Indeed there’s a dramatic urge to construct narratives this way.
Ahsoka avoids this and shows us a different way of handling disaster. Sure, it doesn’t crush us into the next bit of the plot but the space Ezra gives Sabine is wise and compassionate. Trouble finds us all soon enough – there’s no need to rush it.
Ahsoka too has troubles to face but she has emerged from the world between worlds different – more open not just in how she acts but you get the sense that this version of her has, finally, turned her eyes outwards to the rest of the world.
As for Thrawn – he is quickly given space to show how formidable he is and why the Empire would never have fallen if Ezra hadn’t taken him off the table. There’s a delicious moment when he learns who Ahsoka’s master was – a link that Morgan clearly doesn’t understand and his expression as he reasons through the challenge ahead of him is brilliant to watch.
And, to the side of all this, is Baylan Skoll. I have grown increasingly sad knowing that with each episode we see there’s one less of Ray Stevenson giving us his melancholy take on the survivor he’s playing. More than that but he has almost the most compelling element of the show – a mystery I fear we will not see the whole of in the final episode to come.
Verdict: Ahsoka has been fantastic – thrilling action, full of Star Wars wonder with mystery, moral quandaries, and exciting adventure. I’m going to miss this when it’s gone.
