The documentary series chronicling rare and fascinating details of Star Trek takes a look at the production of three linked Star Trek movies, to huge box-office success.
An entire episode of this show was devoted to The Animated Series, the same run time spent here on three motion pictures. Inevitably, with so much content to cover, the stories are broader and more familiar, though this is still a great introduction to The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home.
We look at the production of Khan through Paramount’s TV division, Gene Roddenberry being blocked from direct involvement, the leaking of story details and so much more. How lovely it was to see Ike Eisenmann (Peter Preston) as he is today, as well as director Nicolas Meyer and replacement Saavik Robin Curtis. Along the way, The Voyage Home’s Catherine Hicks reveals that Shatner kept invading her shots and we get to hear about the proposed Eddie Murphy version of the movie.
Verdict: Some good coverage of movies 2-4, skewed predominantly towards The Wrath of Khan, it just doesn’t go as deep as episodes 2 and 3. 7/10
