A film by Umberto Ortegas explores just what it means to be a Starfleet officer, and the dangers that are faced every day.
A high concept episode, this plays out like a documentary, featuring a mixture of talking head interviews and fly-on-the-wall footage. The director is Erica Ortegas’ brother, who, we get to learn, has a specific agenda and point to prove.
As an episode that breaks the show’s regular format, it doesn’t get too clever, and is supported by a decent Star Trek story. I guess my only disappointment is the ending, which is a little too smug – even by 21st Century Trek’s standards – and I genuinely don’t believe that the film would ever have seen light of day.
Verdict: A fun experiment that just about gets away with it – just don’t think about the actual logistics too much. 7/10
