Christine Chapel returns to the Enterprise after her three-month placement with Doctor Korby, but who exactly is that new barman?
It’s three months since the traumatic events of the season opener, and the crew of the Enterprise are preparing for the celebration of the centennial of the founding of the United Federation of Planets. Spock is also excited about the return of Christine, but he’s somewhat crushed when she announces that her mentor Doctor Korby is her ‘date’.
Now, anyone with a good knowledge of TOS will recall Roger Korby from What are Little Girls Made of? but if you don’t, it doesn’t matter. And that’s one of the joys of this show, which drops in Easter eggs for the informed, but doesn’t demand that casual viewers need to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of Trek lore.
Talking of familiar faces, Rhys Darby’s interfering character may or may not be someone you know, but it’s soon apparent that he’s here to cause mischief. Much of the fun is derived from watching the comedy of errors that unfolds before us, and while a reset switch is inevitable, it’s not all fun and games for every crew member.
Verdict: A character-driven palate cleanser after the big action of the season opener, highlighting the range that the show can offer. 8/10
