Returning to a planet that dredges up tragic memories, Captain Pike and his landing party find themselves forgetting everything, including their own identities.
Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow was always going to be a tough act to follow, and while Among the Lotus Eaters can’t be seen as a bad episode, it’s the weakest of the first four shows this season.
The plot line of the crew getting enchanted/controlled by an external force is something that has been done to death multiple times on genre shows, frequently within the Star Trek universe. There’s a slight variation on the theme here, but the stories always rely on someone snapping out of it to hit the reset switch, which is what understandably happens here.
Familiar plot aside, there’s good moments for Erica Ortegas (she nearly gets an away mission) and Captain Pike, who has to address his relationship with Captain Batel following Una’s court martial. And seasoned fans will also immediately recognise the name of the planet… if they can remember it!
Verdict: A generic Star Trek plot helped by some nice character moments, but by no means a classic. 6/10
