The adventures of Dal and his friends as they join Admiral Janeway on the USS Voyager.
The animated Star Trek show for younger viewers premiers its sophomore year on Netflix in a single 20-episode drop, and continues on the promise of its first season.
As I stressed throughout my reviews of year 1, don’t assume that because this show skews young that it is childish – far from it. Far more sophisticated than its ‘grown-up’ stablemate Below Decks, Prodigy never patronises its viewers, merely takes its time to explain the show’s concepts, assuming that a lot of this is new to them.
The opening two-parter sets the scene for the year, taking Dal and his crew of rebels away from their studies to join Janeway on an upgraded Voyager. The admiral is desperate to rescue her former Number One, Chakotay, who is stranded on the other side of a wormhole, while Gwyn returns to get her home planet, Solum, to try to prevent the civil war from happening.
Temporal mechanics are touched upon, an old foe returns, and before you can say ‘USS Defiant’, a smart new vessel is introduced to give our crew something cool to run about in. It’s all very reassuringly familiar too. If Picard was for the TNG fans, then Prodigy is clearly here for the Voyager faithful.
Verdict: New season, new mission, new channel. Same high quality and rollicking half hour of animation. 8/10
