At the edge of Federation space, the crew applies for asylum at a remote Federation communications relay station, only for their starship to reveal its shocking true purpose.

Beginning with an exciting underwater sequence where members of the Protostar crew rescue a creature from poachers, the animated Star Trek show for younger viewers continues its first season with an exciting return.

In story time it’s been weeks since the crew made their escape in the stolen Federation starship and they’ve clearly used their time to bond. They’ve reached Federation relay station CR 721 and meet its sole occupant, handing over the ship and seeking sanctuary. On entry, they are all scanned, and someone is told that they need to visit Starfleet Command to discover what race they are.

Elsewhere, the real Vice Admiral Janeway is remembering her last meeting with Captain Chakotay before he embarked on the Protostar, and we discover that there’s something happening down in the hull of the ship…

Verdict: While made for kids, there’s nothing infantile about Prodigy, which is more than I can say about another animated show in the franchise. 8/10
