Boimler’s holodeck movie sequel tries to live up to the original.

This one is for the movie fans. One of the highlights of the show’s first season was Crisis Point, which allowed the series to poke particular fun at the Star Trek movies. Through contrivances that are immaterial, Boimler plans to top his original movie with a bigger sequel, thus allowing us to laugh along at half an hour of sight gags and movie cliches.

Everything is here, from the MacGuffin – the Chronogami, which folds time – to a gorgeous / estranged love interest, to devices that conveniently narrate the plot. All the while, this is being called out by Mariner as the voice of the audience. My favourite moment was when she was presented with the prospect of a Kelvinverse alternate timeline. ‘Does it make an alternate cinematic timeline that runs concurrent to our own, but with different people playing younger versions of us?’ she exasperates.

Long-term Trek movie buffs will have no difficulty in recognising the targets that are being mercilessly ribbed – an omnipotent being that wants to discuss the meaning of life, you say? – and as a series of standalone gags, the hit rate is pretty high. There’s even a coda that suggests we’ll be returning for more.

Verdict: An affectionate celebration of Star Trek movie cliches. 8/10
