A new work protocol eliminating “buffer time” has the Lower Decks crew running ragged as they try to keep up with their tightened schedules.

You’ve got to pity the crew of the USS Cerritos. They know that they’re a second tier ship and just when it looks like they’ll be carrying out a major peace initiative, it’s snatched away from them and they’re given a minor mission to deliver a crystal. Except that nothing ever goes their way, and what should be a straight-forward presentation becomes a major diplomatic incident.

CBS All Access’ animated look at the lower decks of a starship continues to settle into its stride, giving Ensigns Mariner and Boimler plenty to do, though Rutherford and Tendi get short changed. The interaction between Mariner (a feisty Tawny Newsome) and her vainglorious Commander make for the best moments. Played with relish by Sliders’ Jerry O’Connell, Commander Jack Ransom represents the worst toxic masculinity of Kirk and Riker, and yet somehow we love watching what scrapes he lands himself in. Importantly, Mariner can see right through him and she maintains the upper hand.

On the Cerritos, Boimler saves the day (again) but his reward is having a non-flattering rule named after him – the Boimler Effect – and there’s a lovely coda to the episode with references to both big birds of the galaxy and Miles O’Brien.

Verdict: Another fun poke at what makes Star Trek Star Trek. It’s all done very affectionately and there’s no malice in the jokes. 8/10
