On the way to the next clue, the Discovery is sabotaged by a mysterious weapon, leaving Burnham, Rayner, and Stamets as the only crew members who can possibly save the ship.

What at first appears to be another formulaic ‘quest of the week’ show is sabotaged by a time bug and allows us to have a temporary pause from the wider arc. Burnham and Rayner find themselves jumping forwards and backwards in time, and while the concept is certainly not new to Star Trek, it makes for some fun moments.

What I’m enjoying most about this season is Callum Keith Rennie’s Rayner, whose belligerent attitude is completely at odds with Burnham and her harmonious crew. The actor looks like he’s having a ball, and his teaming up with Burnham makes for a good duo this week. Of course, like any good time travel episode, there are moments of catching up with people who are no longer alive, as well as revisiting relationships that were previously in a better place. There’s also new meaning to the phrases ‘beating yourself up’ and ‘having a word with yourself’.

Verdict: Much better. A well-worn Star Trek trope given a Discovery spin, and delivering the goods. 8/10
