Star Trek: Discovery returns for its fifth and final 10-part run, and on the basis of this opener, the emphasis is on fun. After a brief reminder of where everyone is at, Dr Kovich (the excellent David Cronenberg) announces a Red Directive to get the Discovery to the scene of an ancient vessel that contains top secret technology.
Unfortunately, it’s not just Discovery seeking the treasure, as two raiders Moll (Eve Harlow – dusky eyes and bird nest hair like Pris in Blade Runner) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis) are already two steps ahead. Cue some ‘getting the band back together’ moments and the introduction of belligerent Starfleet captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) and it’s a breezy hour, with an exciting action sequence involving two starships.
Verdict: Feeling more like a victory lap than trying to offer anything new, this is confident, fun Star Trek. 8/10
