The importance of a reliable witness.
The fog starts to lift as Kirby’s bravery in the face of ridicule and some (quite literal) life-changing challenges comes to the fore.
She’s tenacious, I’ll give her that. As she begins to work with Dan on the possible connection between a recently discovered body and her own attack, we find ourselves wrestling as he does with her reliability as her erratic behaviour and the threads of her strange life don’t seem to add up. There’s a sense of us unravelling the mystery with him, and it’s nicely done.
The extent of Harper’s evil starts to be laid out for us, in arguably Jamie Bell’s darkest role yet. He’s quite unnerving, at once charming and with the ability to turn on a knife-edge, making Harper completely unpredictable, which is a refreshing change in a world full of stories about violence against women wrought by men just because they could. Despite the horror of it, I want to know why he does what he does.
Not many questions are answered yet, which is very much on brand from episode 1, but there’s enough that I can consider myself on board this dark ride.
Verdict: The narrative breadcrumb trail continues, revealing an original mystery. 8/10
