Memories are made to be forgotten.
This instalment is bookended by some huge shocks. Firstly, our new player – Regabhi, the surgeon who severed Mark, we learn – poses some challenging questions to his ‘outie’ about the ethics of his decision. Reeling from that mental tongue twister, I really wasn’t expecting what happened next, but it’s the catalyst for a much faster-paced episode.
The repercussions of the ‘overtime contingency’ that Milchick inflicted on Dylan come back to bite him in a very literal sense, as the most awkward and brief office disco (‘music dance experience’) unfolds before your eyes, just in case you forgot that Severance can be both dark and funny in the most twisted and enigmatic way. You’ve got some truly defiant moves there, Mark.
The MDR team are on an even greater lockdown ‘protocol’ as the rebellion grows. We see this build-up organically as Dylan and Irving suffer setbacks, and there are subtle and clever changes to the scenery that complement the narrative. All this adds to the general vibe of unease that we’ve come to expect from this well-crafted drama. Cobel’s insidious infiltration of Mark’s ‘outie’ life in her alter-ego progresses, but why does she ask specifically about his wife, and why that question?
By the closing scenes, there is a clear motive for each member of the team to take drastic action. Or possibly not, as Mark seems to have the most nebulous reasons, other than his leadership of the team and alleged soft spot for Helly. Another brilliant and still performance as poor Mark will break your heart as he lets a new connection slip through his hands. Could it be that he is finally starting to grieve his wife rather than escape the devastation of his loss? Could the darkest part of the night herald the dawn? Cue one of those glorious moments when you’re engrossed in a story then suddenly so many pieces of the puzzle come together. I’m adding 2 points just for the last 3 minutes as the cleverness just levelled-up.
Verdict: Picking up the pace, major events start to come together to reveal the cruelty Lumon may be capable of. 10/10
