Liz feels betrayed by Max’s unilateral decision and takes some time and space to reconnect with family. Maria struggles with whatever her mother’s spirit may be trying to tell her from the beyond. Dallas and Isobel go digging deeper into Dallas’ mindscape for answers.

So, who thought that Max kissing Bonnie to relieve himself of his powers without having discussed it at all with anyone, including Liz, might immediately backfire on him? Yes, it’s time for one of those periodic time outs that these two star-crossed lovers seem to so often have, because they love each other so much but they really aren’t good at the whole communicating bit.

So Liz takes off to visit ‘Cousin’ Rosa, piggybacking the flight Shivani has booked to go see the latest company she’s acquired. Unfortunately, what should be a happy reunion turns a little sour as Liz forgets herself somewhat in the process of introducing her ‘cousin’ to her new science-bestie. Personal growth is still a thing Liz can do though, and it’s nice to see Rosa get the opportunity to act like the big sister to her actual little sister for once.

Back in Roswell, Max and Michael have a bit of communicating of their own to do. Michael hasn’t been entirely forthright with his siblings and Max is worried that his wayward little brother seems a little too eager to step onto the first available space ship and fly back home. Per usual, it takes some straight talking from Isobel to set the two of them on a better, more communicative course.

That’s on top of Isobel making time to help Dallas delve ever deeper into his mindscape. The bible, after all is but half the puzzle, and what they really need is the glasses to decipher it. It’s nice seeing Isobel and Dallas get some quality interaction, even if it does inevitably get a little bit awkward.

Maria is struggling to decipher exactly what cryptic message it is that her mother might be trying to send her from beyond the grave. As the strange little incidents pile up, she’s forced to confront the idea that she may not really understand what’s happening at all.

Finally there’s the ongoing saga of the Dark Triad. Bonnie is fully on side but can she and the gang bring Clyde around to their way of thinking so they can defeat whatever plan Tezca is concocting. The only thing is, they may have wildly miscalculated the issue that they are dealing with and the enemies they face.

There’s a recurrent theme here of older, wiser siblings/friends basically offering variants of the same advice to people about being true to oneself and living life more fully as a result. There’s also some commentary thrown in once again about the darker chapters of humanity’s history and present, and how these are not so very different from the planet Max and co all came from. It’s lovely to finally see Amber Midthunder return to the screen, but my main question as we head into the back half of the season is: when is Alex coming back?

Verdict: Recurrent themes and interesting twists – a final season that continues to deliver. 8/10
