Mother prepares to give birth, but there’s concern as to what the child’s origins are.

For a season finale, this isn’t a slam dunk large-scale wrap-up, and if anything reverts to the pace that dogged the middle section of this run. Things happen, but arguably we could have had more to leave us salivating about the now-confirmed season two.

Ridley Scott is producer of the show, and if there’s a common theme in his work, he likes a non-standard birth – Prometheus and Alien being prime examples. And the ‘child’ that Mother delivers is far from normal, and doesn’t leave her body via regular means. As with Alien, the progeny becomes the new mission, much to Father’s annoyance, who argues with Mother as if they’re an old married couple.

As things finish, there a number of plates spinning to take us forward into the next run of episodes, whenever they can be shot. If I’m honest, I don’t think the show has fulfilled the potential that its premise suggested, but it’s lucky enough to get the chance to expand its mythology and potentially shift up a gear.

Verdict: A solid episode that feels less like a finale than a regular instalment. It’s still classy, hard sci-fi, but the pacing is still loo languorous for me. 7/10
