Carol is bored to the point of insanity in Albuquerque as Manousos starts his journey from Paraguay to New Mexico.
As Plur1bus speeds towards its thrilling climax the only thing that can add to this adrenalin filled ride is to experience in brain-numbing detail exactly how tedious life would be in Albuquerque if the whole city ghosted you. And my God, it really is tedious. As we live every empty moment of Carol’s life with her – seemingly in real time, although perhaps a bit slower than that – Vince and the team are steadfast in their quest for us to share in her existential pain as viewers, which, in my case, is exacerbated, because it would be to break the sacred reviewers’ oath to fast-forward.
Down in Paraguay, fellow immune Manousos sets off northwards towards New Mexico, very much in his own time. It’s like a travelogue with all the interesting bits taken out. He runs out of petrol on numerous occasions siphoning what he needs from deserted vehicles. This is almost an interesting detail, but Vince, please, I beg you – I’m actually on my knees as I write this – once would have been enough.
Anyway, Manousos does run into some difficulties the Darien Gap which absolutely spices things up for at least three minutes – I felt slightly faint with the excitement, but luckily my wife keeps a stock of smelling salts handy for these moments of intense trauma – before we return to Carol who, thank the heavens, has finally had enough.
Verdict: To be honest, I’m not sure how much more of this I can take, but there’s only two episodes left so I’ve convinced myself that Vince is saving something exciting up for the grand finale. He has to be. Doesn’t he? Doesn’t he?!? 6/10
