Alfred finds himself with more questions than answers. Mrs P tries to start a new chapter in her life. Patrick reveals to Thomas the exact nature of the individual he’s tracking. Martha gets herself in a tight spot.

A blood-spattered girl turning up and fainting on your doorstep holding a bloodied knife is a bit of a pickle to find yourself in, even when you’re as resourceful as Alfred Pennyworth, and Alfie finds himself with some pointed questions to answer from the police and Mr Aziz. That’s rapidly the least of his worries, however, as it becomes clear that the UK authorities are far from the only people with an interest in the young girl.

It transpires that the nanny who hired Alfie and Daveboy wasn’t all that she seemed either, and soon it’s obvious that the two are trapped once again in events far above their preferred height. But they can’t simply walk away, so hiding the girl in the safest place they can think of, they set about looking for some answers.

Meanwhile, Mrs P is engaged on a secretive mission of her own, one which she is going to great lengths to hide from her son, made all the harder by the fact of his still living at home. A woman has needs after all, and Mr P isn’t getting any less dead and gone. Answering a lonely hearts ad, she finds herself confronted with an apparently sweet-natured gentleman, but is she really ready to take this next step in life just yet? And what might Alfie think or do when he discovers she’s considering it?

Thomas goes to Alfie to try to get some straight answers about exactly what it is that Martha is involved in, work-wise these days. Alfie isn’t about to rat out his old friend, but he’s also not exactly the most convincing of liars. Thomas’s problems grow as his father starts to reveal to him exactly the nature of the man he’s been sent to track down, and why the US government is keen on keeping this all as quiet as possible.

Meanwhile, working the problem from different angles, Martha and Alfie and Daveboy all come to the same conclusion that’s been gifted to Thomas, at the same time finding themselves in the middle of violence as per usual. Alfie and Daveboy realise that the safe place they’ve stashed the girl might actually be the absolute worst place they could have chosen, but can they get there in time to rectify their mistake? Meanwhile, Martha makes an unfortunate further discovery which suggests that the inevitable uncomfortable conversations she was set to have with Thomas may be an awful lot worse than either of them could have anticipated.

It’s surprising how quickly the show is moving to draw the various disparate characters together in common cause, but that cause is big enough that it feels like it may well take most of a season to resolve. All good news for us as viewers, maybe less so for the poor characters themselves.

Verdict: Building momentum nicely. 8/10
