Lewis confronts Townsend in his office, Tiago questions Adelaide, and Maria discovers that her new charge is a little monster.
I must confess that considering how far we are through the season, I expected a picking up of the pace. But no, it’s as if we’re back in the formative early episodes where the characters were establishing themselves, rather than chasing down the final three hours. Finally, Peter Craft (Rory Kinnear) is discovering his backbone, standing up to his demanding mistress, while poor Maria has a demon child in her care who mocks her and pretends to be injured as a result of her poor childminding.
Even Lewis and Tiago feel like they’re starting to get somewhere as their investigations link the disparate pieces of the puzzle together, and about time too. In the most memorable scene, Peter visit his wife in the sanatorium where he has abandoned her, only to discover that she’s not going down without a fight – and good for her. It feels like the worms are beginning to turn, and that Madga’s plan for total war is not as simple as anticipated.
Verdict: Solid storytelling witnessing shoots of hope, but is there enough time remaining to satisfactorily conclude the season? 7/10
