Mateo grapples with the aftermath of his actions, Josefina confides in Sister Molly, and Peter receives and alarming phone call from Elsa.

As John Logan’s supernatural LA noir hits its season one halfway mark it’s increasingly apparent that all roads lead to the Vega family. Whether Detective Tiago, who’s continuing his relationship with Sister Molly, Josefina (who is sharing her violation by the NYPD) or Mateo, who is now facing up to the fallout of his cop killing – the Vegas are central to the plot.

That’s not to say Natalie Dormer’s Magda is taking a back seat in this hour – directed by Star Trek: Voyager’s Roxann Dawson – she continues to blackmail, beguile and bewitch those who fall under the spell of her Alex, Rio and Elsa incarnations, the latter calling on Rory Kinnear’s Peter Craft to help dispose of a body. Everything is going to plan, with all factions ready to set the city on fire.

Verdict: Family honour and loyalties come to a head in the Vega household in a pivot episode that will shape the final half of this season. It’s a quality hour and if you’re willing to accept the frequently languid pace it rewards admirably. 7/10
