Langston Fleury (Tim Meadows) leads a catastrophic attack on Peacemaker’s house. Peacemaker and Vigilante engage in a little body disposal. The 11th Street Kids throw a party and Peacemaker makes some choices.
Picking right up with Chris cradling his alternate self’s dead body, this episode keeps the pace and action and humour running but folds in some excellent character beats. The party is a standout, Economos bristling with unease at the fact he’s spying on his friends and Adebayo gently needling Harcourt over Chris. It’s a great scene for everyone in fact, all them of uneasy and none of them quite letting themselves see it. It also seems to set up a good chunk of the rest of the season as Chris texts the alternate Emilia Harcourt and gets a very welcome answer that propels him into episode 3.
But we need to talk about Langston Fleury and Eagly. Tim Meadows is one of the best comic actors working today and his deadpan delivery, macho dialogue and bird blindness give the episode almost all it’s best jokes. He’s especially great in scenes with Agee, Economos’ placid loathing of the world the perfect counterpoint to his aggressive perkyness.
That being said, this is Eagly’s episode. Chris’ avian brother straight up demolishes Fleury’s strike team in a scene that’s horrific, funny and tense. Eagly is just an Eagle, and there’s real unease in the fan community over the fact he’s got a badass moment (complete with slow motion walk off!) this early. Michael Rooker shows up next episode as Red St Wild, ‘the world’s foremost eagle hunter’ too. Look out, little buddy!
Verdict: This is a raucous, riotous episode that moves everyone along, opens with Chris disposing of his own dead body and finishes with Eagly taking care of business. It may be the best episode the show’s ever put out and I’m thrilled to see where the season goes next. 10/10
