With the plane now a smoking ruin, the authorities are increasingly anxious as to what they should do with the passengers of flight 828. Michaela struggles to re-adjust to life being back from the dead and what to do about her best friend being married to ‘her’ fiancé. Meanwhile Ben is led by his new ability to another encounter with someone who needs his help. But how long will it be before Grace tells him the truth?
So, last time out the plane blew itself to bits with twenty of the passengers stood there watching it. That goes over with the authorities and the media about as well as you might imagine and they all find themselves subject to even more questions and a stern warning that they should not speak further to anyone, including the media. No prizes will be awarded to anyone who can guess whether every one of them manages to stick to that rule.
Michaela is faced increasingly with the reality that she’s literally resurrected as far as the rest of the world is concerned, and all she really wants to do is get back to work. To do that she has to ‘jump through some hoops’, one of which is a psychiatric evaluation. It’s not difficult to understand why she’s struggling – for her, mere days have passed and she’s come back ready to marry a man who it turns out has been married to her best friend for several years. When she happens upon a social media page dedicated to her memory, with various written and video tributes, several from her best friend, it’s a sobering moment, and one that feels relatable.
Meanwhile, Ben is hearing things again, signifying that another person is in trouble and needs his help. This is a bit of an odd one, if I’m honest – it feels like a little bit of a stretch both in terms of the immediate circumstance and the eventual conclusion of it, but still it’s nice to see him continuing to answer the call and use his powers for good I guess.
More pressing is the continued tension of when Grace is going to tell him she’s clearly been seeing someone else. What strikes me as off here is that his own sister is facing the reality of her fiancé having married someone else in their presumed dead absence, yet it never occurs to Ben to ask the same question of his wife. That his daughter keeps telling her mother she needs to fess up adds a whole other layer of tension to proceedings.
And as for elsewhere – everything just ticks over really until another fairly explosive conclusion which adds another layer of questions to the overall mystery. I suspect this is going to be an intriguing ride.
Verdict: Sensibly focusing on the human details against a fantastical backdrop. Good, solid entertainment with a nice thread pulling us onward. 8/10
