As Ben becomes more involved with Eureka, Michaela experiences a new and disturbing Calling. A group of passengers with the same Calling take some drastic actions. Saanvi earns her place at Eureka with a breakthrough.

Ben’s plan to save the souls of Pete and Kory may have gone more than a bit wrong, but a deal is a deal and he duly turns up to Eureka to have his vitals checked ready for them to start using him as their replacement guinea pig. While he’s doing that though, Michaela has a disturbing new Calling, and she’s not the only one – a group of passengers led by Eagan also receive the same dark vision, and when all converge on the building where Eureka is housed and see Ben emerging, things start moving fast.

For Michaela’s part, she starts to question exactly what her brother is thinking. She doesn’t trust Vance now that he is once again working for the government, and doesn’t see why Ben would risk further involvement with Eureka, even more so now that she has seen this vision of darkness which seems to relate to them.

Eagan and his followers take a more direct route to finding out exactly what’s going on. These are passengers who are tired of Ben’s constant questions and communications, who distrust the world at large as much as it distrusts them. They want to know why the man who has been so intensely lobbying them for their attention and cooperation for so long now seems to be working with an enemy not just of them, but of whatever force drives the Callings and brought them all back.

Eagan is definitely an intriguing player in all this – it’s certainly apparent that despite appearing as a loner when we first met him, he has the charisma and energy to rally groups of people behind him. He’s also extremely smart and not afraid of taking risks. This makes him a compelling new element in the show’s format – he could be friend or foe, and in truth is likely a bit of both, but one thing he’ll never be is dull.

Meanwhile, Saanvi avoids being kicked out of Eureka when she makes a discovery that nobody else has noticed. A discovery which prompts the delivery of a new artefact from a very specific place which may relate to the mystery of 828. An artefact which may link back to the dark visions granted the passengers by the Callings.

It’s very apparent that the show has elected to take an entirely supernatural direction as opposed to a more sci-fi one from recent episodes, and this one really hammers that point home. Whether that’s a direction that will please long term fans of the show remains to be seen, though arguably the clues have always been there from the pilot onward. Seeing it really commit to those themes is different though – it works for me, but I wonder if it will alienate others. Time will tell.

Verdict: A decent instalment that builds on seeds planted earlier and really starts to cement the direction of travel for the show going forward. 8/10
