Needing space from Lucifer, Chloe asks for Amenadiel’s help after a murder in a convent…

This episode feels as if it’s there to wrap things up for the time being – and if Series 5 had stayed at its original ten-episode length, then perhaps this would have been the last one of the first batch. There’s plenty of explanations for elements of the mythology, there’s closure to a degree for Linda, and even for Maze, Lucifer and Detective Douche find a way to work together that doesn’t leave them at each other’s throats, and a more central role for DB Woodside’s Amenadiel – who first into Chloe’s world rather well. Of course, there are still plenty of things left to deal with, not least Michael’s lust for revenge on Lucifer, and the “handwavium” that permitted Amenadiel and Lucifer both to be on Earth rather than one of them looking after Hell.

In some ways this episode feels like a throwback to the earlier, often lighter, episodes – there’s humour in the way the crime scene is dealt with, and the sparring between Lucifer and Dan still has an edge, but an element of respect between them. The Linda/Maze plotline stays separate from everything else, but the two actors’ rapport makes the scenes both dramatic and humorous. And Lauren German gets to play more sides to Chloe – the scene in the interrogation room with Lucifer and Amenadiel when she learns an unpleasant truth is terrific – with the final scene one that many have hoped for. It can’t last, of course…

Verdict: A solid hour that ties a lot up. 8/10
