God decides to be human.

This episode could probably as easily have been called “Out of the Mouth” as in the quote from the Psalms about babes and sucklings and ordaining strength. The whole episode builds to a chat on an amazingly deserted Subway station between God and Trixie, where each helps the other to sort out what they need – with consequences that will last well beyond this episode. Scarlett Estevez gets more focus on her than usual, starting with a ride in the back of a cop car because she’s been a little too good at dealing with bullies, and continues to not be the annoying cute kid.

We also get to spend some time with Maze, as she listens to the conversation, and then gets a surprising revelation from God, shortly before the latter decides to drop a bombshell on his sons – the trigger for the endgame for the series, I suspect.

The humour derives from God being human – ranging from His first experience of brain freeze to a rather unfortunate slip of the tongue while accompanying Lucifer on a  sting operation – but as this show does when it’s on form, that can be twisted on a dime to a dramatic sequence.

Verdict: A well-balanced episode. 8/10
