Chloe and Maze are still rounding up the bad guys in LA, while Lucifer gets a shock when his latest hell loop victim takes him ‘back’ to Marina del Rey…

There’s a very handy recap available at the start of season 5 of Lucifer on Netflix, picking up all the key points from the previous year, and the various issues that led to Lucifer returning to pick up the mantle of King of Hell once more. This opener sees his interest piqued by a new arrival, whose murder is being investigated by Chloe – and it makes him question his life with The Detective, and his decisions. As the title suggests, he becomes something of a really sad devil guy, and it seems as if he makes a critical turn.

Meanwhile on Earth, the relationship between Chloe and Maze is pushed to its limits, while Amenadiel and Linda face new challenges – the latter’s ideas of the necessary level of education are brought firmly down to earth by the arrival of Trixie (who’s grown up a hell of a lot more than a couple of months between seasons!). Dan is still trying to self-improve – but a quick shot of the photos on his desk show where his focus still really is – and Ella knows her own faults, but can’t help succumbing to temptation.

The last few minutes suggest that things are getting back to normal a lot quicker than you might expect. But this is Lucifer – and things aren’t always as they appear.

Verdict: A murder investigated on two planes of existence by a lot of damaged people. 8/10
