Lisey faces Dooley and discovers Scott’s final gift to her.
And so it ends, with a whimper, not a bang. After eight weeks, we deserved better, and if this serial proves anything, there’s more to adapting a book then just chopping it into pieces and getting it up on the screen.
Part of the disappointment comes from the unsatisfactory conclusions to the two main plot threads – the end of Dooley’s and Scott’s dad’s stories. Both of them each had an episode devoted to them, suggesting that in this final hour we’d get an appropriate endgame. Not so. Having brutally tortured Lisey for so long, Dooley’s end comes at the giant hands of the Lawn Boy, minutes into the episode. It’s a horrific moment, but there’s no sense of any achievement – it’s almost comedic when Lisey throws the body parts into the river.
But that’s not the end of the story. We still didn’t know what happened to Scott’s father after he killed his oldest son. The conclusion? Another miserable death in a parade of grim endings. This series worked best when all three sisters bonded to fight the evil, but only Lisey plays a significant role in this final hour.
Verdict: A disappointing conclusion to an already flawed adaptation of one of Stephen King’s favourite novels. Muddled, poorly paced and far too long. 6/10
